SONGS

I wrote the following tunes, except where noted. See lyrics page for, well, the lyrics. Alernately, the lyrics will follow each tune. Or maybe we will end up with both the lyrics on a separate page and the song page with lyrics for each tune.

Aim High

© Jonathan Churcher September 2016.

The audio of Aim High will be here soon.

Verse One
Aim high when you’re wandering solo. Aim high when you’re desperate for change.
Aim high when she’s walking towards you and she’s within range.
Aim high when you dial the number. Aim high when you make the connection.
Aim high when she’s sitting in front of you and you think she’s perfection.
You sit down and talk and you think she’s perfection.
You think she’s perfection. She is perfection.

Verse Two
Aim high when she’s standing in front of you. Aim high when you realize.
You’re feeling all crazy and wonderful, she’s looking deep into your eyes.
Aim high when the kissing won’t stop.  Aim high when you play truth and dare.
Aim high when you go beyond words and she’s already there.
You go beyond words and she’s already there. She’s already there. Right there.

Refrain
Aim high when you tell her your story, aim high when you speak of your pain, Aim high when you tell her you love her again and again and again and again.
Aim high when you dance your dance, aim high when you laugh your laugh, Aim high when there’s nothing to know, you have nothing to ask.

Verse Three
Aim high when you’re feeling rage, aim high when the energy’s gone.
Aim high when you try to explain but everything comes out all wrong.
Aim high when the truth gets ugly, aim high when she curses your name.
Aim high when you show her your heart and she just walks away.

But don’t give up.

Refrain
Aim high when she tells you her story, aim high when she speaks of her pain.
Aim high when she tells you she loves you again and again and again and again.
Aim high when she dances her dance, aim high when she laughs her laugh
When there’s nothing she needs to know, nothing she needs to ask.

Aim high, aim high, aim high, aim high.

The Ballad of Springhill

Writers: Peggy Seeger and Ewan MacColl

The Ballad of Springhill   © Ewan McColl/Peggy Seeger

One

In the town of Springhill, Nova Scotia
Down in the dark of the Cumberland Mine
There’s blood on the coal and the miners lie
In roads that never saw sun nor sky
Roads that never saw sun nor sky

Two

In the town of Springhill, you don’t sleep easy
Sometimes the earth will tremble and roll.
And when the earth is restless, miners die.
Bone and blood is the price of coal, Bone and blood is the price of coal

Three

In the town of Springhill, Nova Scotia
Late in the year of fifty-eight
Day still comes and the sun still shines
But it’s dark as a grave in the Cumberland mine, Dark as a grave in the Cumberland mine

Four

Down at the coal face, miners working
Rattle of the belt and the cutter’s blade.
Rumble of the rock and the walls close round
Living and the dead men two miles down.
Living and the dead men two miles down.

Five

Twelve men lay two miles from the pit shaft
Twelve men lay in the dark and sang.
Long hot days in a miner’s tomb
It was three feet wide and a hundred feet long
Three feet wide and a hundred feet long

Six

Three days past and the lights went out
That’s when Caleb Rushton said,
“We’ve no more water nor light nor bread
So we’ll live on hope and song instead
We’ll live on hope and song instead”.

Seven

Listen for the shouts of the barefaced miners
Listen through the rubble for the rescue team
Six hundred feet of coal and slag
Hope imprisoned in a three foot seam.
Hope imprisoned in a three foot seam.

Eight

Eight days passed and some were rescued
Leaving the dead to lie alone
All their lives they dug their grave
Two miles of earth for a marking stone
Two miles of earth for a marking stone

Nine

In the town of Springhill, you don’t sleep easy
Sometimes the earth will tremble and roll.

Ballad of Walter Edgi

With help and encouragement from his family, this tune honours a well-known Yellowknife inhabitant. Walter Edgi walked the streets of Yellowknife every day.

The Ballad of Walter Edgi

Verse One
He was born on the banks of the beautiful Deh Cho
Life changed fast, and what did he know?
They took him as a child, he didn’t understand
Why he could not live in his ancestral land.
All alone far from home and friends.
In a really bad school, where the pain never ends.

Verse Two
When Canada was a hundred years old.He wanted to be brave, to do something bold. Out of the blue, he got a call, would you like to paddle to Montreal? Three-thousand miles in a  canoe, he did not quit, he made it through.

Chorus One
What a summer that was, he was part of a team. With hope and joy, he started to dream. Go back home, hunt caribou, catch fish for the elders and the sick ones too.

Verse Three  Many years later, a lot went down. His precious mother died, he left the small town. From then on, the streets were his home.In Yellowknife, he was quite well known.A photo shows him with such sad eyes. They say, “I had dreams, but all of them died.”

Verse Four
He trudged like a trapper through alleys and lanes Past City Hall to the Frame Lake Trail. From there onto Old Airport Road With a big black bag to the bottle depot.Though he wasn’t trapping lynx, marten, or fox.Ancestors were with him wherever he walked.

Chorus Two
Year after year in the cold and the heat              He never stopped, he never missed a beat.Step after step, with a determined strideSuch persistence and a will to survive.

Verse Five
On a warm July day, down by the lake. The very last trip he’d ever take. With ptarmigan, jays, and ravens around,He lay what he was carrying on the ground.Framed by the shoreline and warmed by the breeze,He took his last steps in the whispering trees.

Chorus Three
Though he wasn’t trapping lynx, marten or fox.Ancestors were with him wherever he walked. On the other side, he’s not alone.Ancestors are guiding him home.

Colliding With Goliath

Colliding With Goliath  ©Jonathan Churcher 2015

Verse 1

He was on a world tour, young, healthy, virile, strong.

Very suave, very cool, with a gift for sweet love songs.

He could move woman’s hearts, he could make them swoon and weep.

They’d scream for him on stage, and call his name out in their sleep.

But the woman he desired, his true soul mate for this life.

The one he loved so deeply, she called him late one night.

Verse 2

Bluntly, and unkindly she declared, “We are through.

I’ve emptied the entire house and our bank account, too.

You’re not creating music, you’re pimping for the man.

Send nothing for my birthday, don’t speak to me again.”

Verse 3

His heart was heavy with grief and disgrace

But he had to perform and with a smile on his face.

Three Times A Lady, Fly Me To the Moon

Ain’t No Cure For Love, he’d valiantly croon.

Take It Easy, Michelle, My Heart Will Go On,

Love Will Keep Us Alive, but the thrill was gone.

He was colliding with Goliath, but time’s healing hands revealed

What the dark and lonely battle with his demons had concealed.

Over the horizon rose a glowing, inner sun.

And then the war was over, he survived, he won.

Those who face Goliath, they are warriors tried and true.

Their solo warrior’s dance opens doors we all walk through.

Have You Ever?

© Jonathan Churcher January 2011.

Chorus
Have you ever held someone so close, it changed their life forever?
Have you ever been held so close it changed your life forever?

Verse One
I felt it once, just for a flash.
No sound or sight, free at last.
No more tomorrow, no more today.
All points of reference taken away.

Chorus
Have you ever held someone so close, it changed their life forever?
Have you ever been held so close it changed your life forever?

Verse Two
There he was, on a ledge
Anger came flying out, fear was spread
Everybody’s thinking, can we pull (or talk) him through?
But it’s not what you say, it’s what you do.

Chorus
Have you ever held someone so close, it changed their life forever?
Have you ever been held so close it changed your life forever?

Verse Three
You struck the chord, you sang the line.
You got the feeling right, and that’s all fine
You found the words, you wrote the whole damn song.
You traveled around the world and prooved the critics wrong, but…

Chorus
Have you ever held someone so close, it changed their life forever?
Have you ever been held so close it changed your life forever?
Have you learned the lesson your heart wants you to know?
Have you learned the lesson your heart wants you to know?

The Journey Home

© Jonathan Churcher October 2011.

Verse One
Turning over in my sleep, I’m vaguely aware
Of a dream about the quickening pulse of a hibernating bear
Salmon feel the primal urge and start their journey home Five hundred fathoms beneath the waves, whales create a song Crowd whispers dying down before the curtains rise This play’s about a growing heart shedding a disguise.

Chorus 1
Say yes and think of every word you’ve ever said
All the voices that you’ve heard, the faces that you’ve read
Say yes and think of all the people you have moved
The times of deep content when there’s nothing left, nothing left
Nothing left to prove.

Verse Two
A time and place arrives that force a person to slow down.
Where soul and spirit and heart and love all find common ground.
Sun sheds its skin and flickering aurora fills the sky,
Glaciers rise and melt, seas fill up and then run dry.
Light years measure distances when silences prevail
It’s time to stir the ethers now and slowly I inhale.

Chorus 2
Say yes and think of every place you’ve been to in this world
All the quiet time you’ve had, all the sounds you’ve heard.
Say yes and think of moments when the galaxies arose.
Long before the planets began to shift and rove, began to shift.
Began to shift and roam, began to shift and roam

Coda
Turning over in my sleep, I’m vaguely aware
Of a dream about the quickening pulse of a hibernating bear.

The Dragon’s Breath

© Jonathan Churcher October 2015.

Smoke from forest fires choked southern NWT in 2014.

Refrain
I live on Silent Hilltop, in the Valley of Don’t Come Near,
In the middle of Lonesome Forest, beside the River of Fear.
I sleep alone in the darkness, I dream of outer space.
I rise each day to the sad refrain of a planet going to waste.

Verse One
Where  the industrial revolution started to unfold.Nobody asked, “What about the globe?” Shakespeare could have penned the script, for all the world’s a stage. Now the plot’s as thick as smoke, we’re the actors in this play.

Verse Two
Lakes and rivers fail, as the rain declines to fail.Insects, plants, and birds they begin a northward crawl.  Mountain lions leave the south, following the deer. The land is full of omens speaking loud and clear.

Chorus
Every lightning strike ignites a forest fire,  Every burning tree emits a cry. Every cry is nature’s voice, listen as it tells. We brought this dragon’s breath upon ourselves.

Verse Four
Such confusion for the hibernating soul,Autumn stays so long and keeps away the cold. Caribou can’t find protection from the winter’s freeze. They wander here and there looking for a stand of trees.

Verse Five
The 2014 wildfires we just can’t ignore.Smoke blocked the highway, it pounded on our door. And this ain’t no incense filling up our lungs all summer long,And it ain’t no ceremonial smudge, it’s way too strong.

Chorus
Every lightning strike ignites a forest fire,  Every burning tree emits a cry. Every cry is nature’s voice, listen as it tells. We brought this dragon’s breath upon ourselves.

Refrain
I live on Silent Hilltop, in the Valley of Don’t Come Near,
In the middle of Lonesome Forest, beside the River of Fear.
I sleep alone in the darkness, I dream of outer space.
I rise each day to the sad refrain of a planet going to waste.

No Eclipse

Clear, Calm, Warm, Breathe. Here, Binary, No, End

Binary star                  No eclipse, binary star
No eclipse                   Circle dance, a la ronde
End this quest                        End this quest, breathe say yes
Clear my head               Here and now         Binary star, warm my heart

Warm this heart            No Eclipse A la ronde, clear my head
Breathe say yes             End this quest Breathe say yes, end this quest
Here and now, swing around            Clear my head   Clear my head, warm my heart

Pack of Lies

© Jonathan Churcher January 2011.

Verse One
Join the table but beware, everybody’s playing solitaire.
Could this be your lucky day? What do the fortune tellers say?
Get closer you can hear the sighs of people playing with a pack of lies.

Verse Two
Face up to the truth, pick any card, turn it over, now that ain’t hard.
Not what you want? –  take some more, add them up, what’s your score?
Nobody wins and nobody ties, when you’re playing with a pack of lies.

Verse Three
This game could be where you win all, go with your gut as you make your call.
A picture’s worth is a thousand words, use them to pray for your re-birth.
You’re gonna need to find a way to rise, when you get hit with a pack of lies.

Verse Four
Hold those cards close to your chest, as close to the heart as you can get .
You seek a warm and a caring hand but not the kind that robs a man.
Still alone after a thousand tries? You must be playing with a pack of lies.

Verse Five
Are you in the lead like an Alpha dog? Or trotting along at an easy jog?
Shuffling with this crowd of fools, when everybody knows Nevada Rules.
Look around and realize, you’ve been running with a pack of lies.

Verse Six
The game continues through the night, it’s getting tense, it’s fight or flight.
The others fold, each falls and quits, the pot is yours, it’s golden chips!
Then you can’t believe your eyes, it’s a glistening pack of lies.
Look around and realize, you’ve been running with qa pack of lies
Nobody wins, nobody ties, when you’re playing with a pack of lies.

Destination YZF

© Jonathan Churcher January 2011.

Verse One
I didn’t want to fly, I hate those all-night flights
Can’t look down at the earth andI love the way it curves.
For the entire day – heavy west coast rain.
Once on-board, just one thought, “when will i see this place again?”
Hey, ay.

Chorus
Above the clouds we are
Headed for the arctic stars
Not weighed down, instead,
Something heavy has been shed
Something has been shed.

Verse Two
Didn’t fall asleep
Watched the city lights recede
The brightest flickered one by one
Disappeared ‘til there were none
Heard a raga in the airplane’s drone
A title track “At Last, Alone”
Not hard to guess what lay below
Foothills, jagged peaks, and snow.
We’d passed the point of no return
Closed my eyes— watched the bridges burn
Took a breath and let it go
From here on it would be all unknown
Hey, ay.

Chorus
Above the clouds we are
Headed to the arctic stars
Not weighed down instead,
Something heavy has been shed
Something has been shed.

Coda
I didn’t want to fly,
I hate those all-night flights
Can’t look down at the earth and
I love the way it curves.

Rock Walker Blues

© Jonathan Churcher 2012.

Verse One
Rock Walker flies through space, and gently touches down.
Rooted in the soft earth, anchored to the ground.
Right away spin and stomp,
Run, leap, twirl, and romp.
He comes out swinging, eager to dance.
He wants to learn from experience.
He’s got a hungry heart, he digs deep,
Somersaults and leaps and bounds.
To a thundering beat.
Ocean diver, forest hiker, mountain climber, he is a sky flyer.

Verse Two
May he ascend like Daedelus, may he remain hawk-eyed.
Never losing focus on the purpose of the ride.
Empowered by a warm updraft,
He’s challenged by an Arctic blast
One day he’ll stare in awe at the hurricane’s advance,
He’ll listen for the stories in the north wind’s chants,
Embedded in the round trip, eventually he’ll learn.
The same wheel that brought him here, takes care of his return.

Verse Three
One day we all take the long journey home.
Face the lonesome valley, prepare for the unknown.
When we’ve gone whence we came.
The world will never be the same.
All I can do is send waves of love to you,
And pray for perfect weather for your rock walker blues.

Visionary Mind

© Jonathan Churcher November 2016.

“The oracles are silent, the deities are mute.
Looks like we are all we’ve got to find a better route.”

Verse One
In the Rockies is a mountain called The Sleeping Buffalo.
To build the nation’s railway, they took away the coal.
Now a different collier works a different mine.
Searching for the treasures of the visionary mind.

Verse Two
Frustration and exhaustion haunt this shadowy domain.
Your heart becomes a shovel, a pick axe is your brain.
Everyone who labours there, no matter how inclined.
Eventually pays homage to the visionary mind.

Chorus
It may strike you when you’re sleeping, or claim you in a crowd.
Come to you as a fleeting thought or an image in a cloud.
A confluence of fables in a crucible of time.
Who knows where it comes from – the visionary mind.

Verse Three
Down the main shaft goes a playwright, another all-night shift.
Stumbling in the darkness, she sometimes curses it.
Maybe one short monologue is all that she can find.
Later she’ll be thankful for the visionary mind.

Verse Four
Musicians have a blast when they wander underground.
The creaking cracking rocks – a whole new world of sound.
Later on the surface they finally unwind.
Letting loose the power of the visionary mind.

Chorus
It may strike you when you’re sleeping, or claim you in a crowd.
Come to you as a fleeting thought or an image in a cloud.
A confluence of fables in a crucible of time.
Who knows where it comes from – the visionary mind.

“We are the hominids, sapiens, the powerful wise ones.
We’ve busted open atoms and made huge cities run.
But this can’t go on much longer, as everybody knows.
We’ve got some heavy debts to pay not far down the road.”

Verse One repeat
In the Rockies is a mountain called The Sleeping Buffalo.
To build the nation’s railway, they took away the coal.
Now a different collier works a different mine.
Searching for the treasures of the visionary mind.

Binary Transmigration

© Jonathan Churcher April 2016.

Verse One
If you’re hearing are you listening?
If you’re listening, do you understand?
If you understand, do you care?
If you care, then you’re on your way.
You’re on your way. You’re on your way.

Verse Two
If you’re on your way, then you must be thinking.
If you’re thinking, you’re probably feeling.
If you’re feeling, maybe you’re inspired.
If you’re inspired, then you’re on your way.
You’re on your way. You’re on your way.

Verse Three
If you’re on your way, maybe someone’s watching.
If someone’s watchin’, maybe they understand.
If they understand, maybe they care.
And if they care, then they’re on their way.
They’re on their way. They’re on their way.

Verse One repeat
If you’re hearing are you listening?
If you’re listening, do you understand?
If you understand, do you care?
If you care, then you’re on your way.
You’re on your way. You’re on your way.

Wave After Wave

© Jonathan Churcher November 2016.

Verse One
Here we are, planted on a wild shoreMagic carpet made of blue and green. On guard we stand, proud residents of Gaialand Eco-systems bursting at the seams. Can’t go forward, can’t go back, stranded in a cul-de-sac of   Ecstasy and misery. Can’t go forward, can’t go back, stranded in a cul-de-sac of  Ecstasy and misery.

Verse Two
Carbon dust scattered in a universe of boom and bust. Gravitated here and took a stand.Primal brain balanced on a calcium frameWond’ring if we fit into a plan.Clergy sings a certain song, science tells them they are wrongAngels embrace and devils lay waste.   Walking where the saints have trod, brandishing the whip and rod, Angels embrace and devils lay waste.

Verse Three
In this solid realm, who is really at the helm?Makes you wonder what controls it all.Numbing fear, hounding us from far and near. Are we headed for another Fall? Some say love is all we need, others get their fix from greed. The pure pure spirit meets the charlatan. Some say love is all we need, others get their fix from greed. The pure pure spirit meets the charlatan.

Troubadour’s Prophecy

© Jonathan Churcher 2011.

Verse One
Around the world our thoughts will fly, in the twinkling of an eye
Our towns will grow and spread so far, joined together with stone and tar.
And where the snow would once be found, the locals walk on open ground
The frightened lowland people flee, running from a rising sea.

Refrain
This story’s told in simple verse, be it blessing be it curse.
I am not singing of next week, it’s future centuries I see.

Verse Two
Where dark of night and bright of day, longer than a season stay.
A man named Franklin I think, will strive, to sail three ships, he won’t survive
The sun descends like a fiery brand, and warms the air of a frigid land.
With no more snow on the mountain side, the hunters’ relics no longer hide.

Refrain
One day the blue replaces white, as water freely flows from ice.
And soon thereafter all will hear, the winding, watery passage is clear.

Verse Three
The wind’s not cold and it cannot freeze, so short the winters all will be.
And no more antlered cattle found, on the melted grazing ground.
As the northern waters growing warm, a whole new nation will be born.
As waters rise on the Mackenzie Delta shore, some wonder if there will
be war.

Refrain
Everything we do or say, creates tomorrow in some way.
Do what you can, be at your best,
Share, teach, give, love, ignore then rest.

Twelve Bar Blues

© Jonathan Churcher January 2011.

Verse One
It’s my favourite place, The Angel’s HeartI stopped there once, and got my start.Relax, breathe deep, empty the mindLeave your body and the planet behind.Float free for a while, go with the flow, glimpse thePromised Land, enjoy the show.
At the Angel’s Heart, I saw you there,
Radiating love and care.
Even today as I walk the streets,I see that warmth in everyone I meet.
This may look like a pleasure cruiseAin’t no such thing its the twelve-bar blues.

VERSE Two
Here we are at the Something Out of Ten So you never know who’s foe or friend.
I’m staring around the room like a maniac,Looking for a pair of eyes that are staring back.I love an Old Town woman in a feverish wayBut she don’t love me that’s plain as day.
The Something Out of Ten shows lessons learnedLike, sooner or later someone gets burned like when aMarried man hangs with a single womanHe’s gonna pay a price and he had it coming.
There’s always a chance that you’ll get bruised,
It’s all part of the twelve-bar blues

VERSE THREE
Here we are at the Lost and Found where Fate and destiny buy the rounds.
It’s dark in here and that’s a shame becauseWe’re all trying to help each other win this game.
Every time someone new walks in it’s déjà vue all over again.
Sometimes Cupid provides a spark
And that’s enough to get us out of the dark.
Such a wild place where anything goes
The good news is they never close
That in itself is a wonderful clue
There ain’t no end to the twelve-bar blues

Verse One
It’s my favourite place, The Angel’s HeartI stopped there once, and got my start.Relax, breathe deep, empty the mindLeave your body and the planet behind.
Float free for a while, go with the flow, glimpse thePromised Land, enjoy the show.

Where I Want To Be

© Jonathan Churcher September 2015

Verse One
Been in sweat lodge darkness, seen the rocky glow,Watched ghosts of mammoth hunters freely come and go.Healers shared their secrets, they turned my heart around,
Listened to Tibetan Monks, they say we’re not earth-bound. They say we’re not earth-bound.

Verse Two
Watched the community choir bring a piece of heaven to town.
Wolves were howling in the night, that’s a wonderful sound.
Heard thrushes sing at down, filled my eyes with tears.
Played music with killer whales, they sang loud and clear. They sang loud and clear.

Refrain
Where you are in time in space, is where I want to be.

Verse Three
Got too close to a big bull elk, he took a run at me.
Felt a Mississippi thunderstorm’s electricity.
Gazed in awe as trumpeter swans rose into the air.
Called grey whales to the shore with a simple, silent prayer.
Called grey whales to the shore with a simple, silent prayer.

Verse Four
Stare into the future, find out what’s in store.
Travel in dimensions, let your spirit soar.
Everybody’s life extends throughout eternity.
But where you are in time and space is where I want to be.

Refrain
Where you are in time in space, is where I want to be.

Gazing At Polaris

© Jonathan Churcher September 2014.

Verse One
When all you hear is breathing and your mind is really calm
When you see the tide has turned, and your frantic pace is gone.
When you’re ready to stand still, and your intellect’s at rest.
Listen for the melodies buried in your chest.

Verse Two
Go walk the El Camino, get some training for your brain
Write letters to the editor, call the mayor, complain.
Burn the midnight oil, burn the candle at both ends.
Become a workaholic, rise so fast you get the bends.

Verse Three
The music in your heart is a vast chromatic scale,
It touches everything from the atom to the whale.
A wellspring of emotion, the energy of life
A constant point of reference, a Polaris star at night.

Verse Four
Buy some Nordic walking poles, never eat ice cream
Binge on sitcom reruns, learn to speak Chinese
Party with your friends, gamble all night long.
Go to work with bloodshot eyes, tell the boss he’s wrong.

Verse Five
Something to consider when your life becomes a blur
A coyote with no heart is just another predator.
What started as eccentric, became a circle true,
I knew I’d found the centre, when your face came into view.

Reverie At Cameron Falls

© Jonathan Churcher 2015.

A strange and perilous wave breaks over the water-worn rocks of Cameron Falls, where plotlines, timelines, headlines, and heartlines converge and merge.

When the earth is a ghost town, and the seasons barely change.
When the earth is a ghost town, and the seasons barely change.
‘Blues for a Blue Blue Planet’ will be the final serenade

Is this just another night of play going nowhere on the unethical treadmill of the good life?

The roaring and cresting tsunami of your shortsightedness towers over you.
Filling your ears with a dumb cacophony that crawls and shudders across the land.
Like a genetically-modified, artificially-intelligenced, industrially-super-sized bulldozer.

If this dwindling waterfall were an oracle, it would not speak with the explosive thunder of a bursting volcano, or the shuddering low groans of a creeping glacier,
but as a drought of whispers.

Our own breath must carry survival secrets to our ears; loud and clear, now and here.
Our own breath must carry survival secrets to our ears; loud and clear, now and here.
Our own breath must carry survival secrets to our ears; loud and clear, now and here.

Colliding With Goliath

© Jonathan Churcher September 2015.

He was on a world tour, young, healthy, virile, strong.
Very suave, very cool, with a gift for sweet love songs.
He could soothe woman’s hearts, he could make them swoon and weep.
They’d scream for him on stage, and call his name out in their sleep.
But the woman he desired, his true soul mate for this life.
The one he loved so deeply, called him late one night.
Bluntly, and unkindly she declared,

“We are through.”
I’ve emptied the entire house and our bank account, too.
You’re not making music, you’re pimping for the man.
Send nothing for my birthday, don’t speak to me again.

Though his heart was heavy with grief and disgrace
He had no choice but to perform and with a smile on his face.
Three Times A Lady, Fly Me To the Moon
Ain’t No Cure For Love, he’d valiantly croon.
Take It Easy, Michelle, My Heart Will Go On,
Love Will Keep Us Alive, and but the thrill was gone.
He was…..

Colliding with Goliath, but time’s healing hands revealed
What the dark and lonely battle with his demons had concealed.
Over the horizon rose a glowing inner sun.
And then the war was over, he survived, he had won.

Those who face Goliath, they are warriors tried and true.
Their solo warrior’s dance opens doors we all walk through.

The Ballad of Walter Edgi

VERSE 1

He was born on the banks of the beautiful Deh Cho, life changed fast, and what did he know?

They took him as a child, and he didn’t understand why he could not live in his ancestral land.

All alone far from home and friends in a really bad school, where the pain never ends.

VERSE 2

When Canada was 100 years old he wanted to be brave, to do something bold.

Out of the blue, he got a call would you like to paddle to Montreal?

Three-thousand miles in a canoe  he did not quit, he made it through.

Chorus

What a summer that was, he was part of a team with hope and joy, he started to dream.

Go back home, hunt caribou, catch fish for the elders and the sick ones too.

VERSE 3

Many years later, a lot went down his mother died, he left the small town.

From then on, the streets were his home in Yellowknife, he was quite well known.

A photo shows him with such sad eyes they say, “I had dreams, but all of them died.”

VERSE 4

He trudged like a trapper through alleys and lanes, past City Hall to the Frame Lake Trail.

From there onto Old Airport Road with a big black bag to the bottle depot.

Though he wasn’t trapping lynx, marten, or fox ancestors were with him wherever he walked.

Chorus

Year after year in the cold and the heat he never stopped, he never missed a beat.

Step after step, with a determined stride; he was a man with a will to survive.

VERSE 6

On a warm July day, down by the lake, the very last trip he’d ever take.

With ptarmigan, jays, and ravens around, he lay what he was carrying on the ground.

Framed by the shoreline and warmed by the breeze, he took his last steps surrounded by trees.

Chorus

Though he wasn’t trapping lynx, marten or fox, ancestors were with him wherever he walked.

On the other side, he’s not alone, ancestors are guiding him home.
